Computer Migration - Things to Consider

Here are a few points which you can consider while doing computer migration. These points are applicable to all migrations irrespective of the migration tool (ADMT, NetIQ, Quest etc)

Active Directory User Migration

Here is a graphical representation of the high level steps involved in an Active Directory migration using ADMT

User Migration and Merging Using Quest Migration Manager

Pre-creating user account in the target domain is a common scenario these days due to single-sign-on solution, HR management procedure etc

Microsoft Right Management Service (RMS)

Rights Management Service (RMS) is an add-on to many RMS aware applications. In this article my main focus is to explain how we can utilize RMS technology with Exchange 2003 and how we can take advantage of RMS technology to increase the email security

Microsoft ISA Server

I am sure we have all either encountered or heard of this "problem" one time or another if the ISA Server is part of the Active Directory Domain. Is it a problem?

Active Directory Explorer v1.42

An updated version of Active Directory Explorer (1.42) is available for download now.

Active Directory Explorer (AD Explorer) is an advanced Active Directory (AD) viewer and editor. You can use AD Explorer to easily navigate an AD database, define favorite locations, view object properties and attributes without having to open dialog boxes, edit permissions, view an object's schema, and execute sophisticated searches that you can save and re-execute.

Active Directory Snapshot Creation and Comparison Using AD Explorer

You can use Active Directory Explorer tool for advanced Active Directory (AD) management.  This tool also includes the ability to save a snapshot of an Active Directory database for off-line viewing and comparisons.

First you need to open/connect your Active Directory database using AD Explorer and then create a snapshot.  Later, you can use this snapshot to compare it with the current Active Directory database.

If you need to compare the AD snapshot, open previously created and current snapshots.  From Compare menu, select the Compare Snapshot option.

As you can see in the following screenshot, it generates a report with “differences”.

You can create scheduled snapshots by launching the tool with the -snapshot command line option.

Domain Services was unable to initialize network connections for incoming LDAP requests

I was getting the following error message when I was trying to mount the AD Snapshot using dsamain utility (http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc753246(WS.10).aspx).

image

You can see the official explanation on KB 959215 - http://support.microsoft.com/kb/959215

My solution was to use a different port.  I randomly selected a port and I was able to successfully mount the snapshot.
