Computer Migration - Things to Consider

Here are a few points which you can consider while doing computer migration. These points are applicable to all migrations irrespective of the migration tool (ADMT, NetIQ, Quest etc)

Active Directory User Migration

Here is a graphical representation of the high level steps involved in an Active Directory migration using ADMT

User Migration and Merging Using Quest Migration Manager

Pre-creating user account in the target domain is a common scenario these days due to single-sign-on solution, HR management procedure etc

Microsoft Right Management Service (RMS)

Rights Management Service (RMS) is an add-on to many RMS aware applications. In this article my main focus is to explain how we can utilize RMS technology with Exchange 2003 and how we can take advantage of RMS technology to increase the email security

Microsoft ISA Server

I am sure we have all either encountered or heard of this "problem" one time or another if the ISA Server is part of the Active Directory Domain. Is it a problem?

DPM Server Backup by Using a Secondary DPM Server

As you know, you can protect/backup a DPM server using a secondary DPM server.  You can see the details on the following TechNet article:

http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb795680.aspx

With the recent release of DPM 2010, I have seen a lot questions about protecting DPM 2007 using a DPM 2010 server and vice versa.  Anyway, the simple answer is both primary and secondary DPM severs should be running the same version.

Summary
•DPM 2007 Server cannot be protected by a secondary DPM 2010 server
•DPM 2010 Server cannot be protected by a secondary DPM 2007 server

DPM 2010 Training for Microsoft Partners

As we move from the Release Candidate to the final DPM product, we want to make sure that Microsoft Partners are ready to help our customers with the latest in data protection from Microsoft.

DPM 2010 is one of two System Center products that will be released next quarter, so we are running a “Partner Readiness Week”.   Customers, don’t worry – we have readiness activities planned for you as well.  Over the week of February 22-26, we will be providing 5 online training sessions to prepare Microsoft Partners to be successful with the next generation of System Center, including:

System Center Essentials (SCE) 2010 offers enterprise-class management to midsized organizations with between 50-500 PCs and up to 50 servers, including physical and virtual machine management.

System Center Data Protection Manager (DPM) 2010 provides continuous data protection for Windows application and file servers, desktops, laptops and Microsoft Virtualization hosts to unified disk-, tape- and cloud-based storage.

We will offer the courses a few times in the upcoming weeks – optimized for different time zones and geographies.   Feb 22-26 are being delivered during the European business day.

For access to the 5 courses associated with SCE and DPM – please go to the Microsoft Partner Learning Center and search for keyword SCELMITLLC or this link

Replica Creation is in Progress - DPM

Issue:
Data Protection Manager (DPM) hangs at "Replica Creation is in Progress" window.

Solution/Workaround:
Disable TCP Chimney Offload. You can use the following command:

netsh int tcp set global chimney=disabled

You can see the details in one of my previous blogs…..

The TCP Chimney Offload is a useful networking technology.  It allows to transfer the work load from CPU to a Network adaptor during the network data transfer. This helps improve the processing of network data on your computer or server without the need for additional programs or any loss to manageability or security.

But sometimes you run into issues with various applications if this option is enabled.  Recently, I have experienced a very slow performance on a DPM 2007 server.  My solution was to disable the TCP Chimney Offload properties.   You need to enable or disable the TCP Chimney Offload option inside OS and Network adaptor properties.  This option will work only if it is enabled or disabled  in both locations.

You can see the details of TCP Chimney Offload enabling and disabling procedure in the following KB article:

DPM 2010 and Error ID 32538

By default the error id  32538 indicates that the DPM has failed to backup more than 100 files.  In DPM 2010, the backup process will skip these issues and continue with the backup.  But if the number of skipped or filed files exceeds 100, DPM will fail the backup with an error ID 32538.  You will see these failed or skipped file information in the log file.

Improvements and Changes in DPM 2010

DPM has consistently aimed at making your backups more reliable. The transition from tape to disk as a medium for storing backups provided the first impetus to improved reliability of backups, and was delivered with DPM 2006, our first release. It also brought about novel concepts of improving the ease of use for administrators with two key innovations:

1. Think SLAs, not jobs: DPM allows you to think in terms of business goals and SLA requirements, rather than do the math for finding out what jobs need to run at what frequency and from which source to which target. You need to identify your business requirements and feed it to a wizard in DPM, and DPM figures out the rest (allocating disk space, scheduling jobs etc.) for you.

2. Alert based monitoring: You don’t have to deal with individual failures to identify the root causes. DPM filters out the noise and shows what’s actionable.

Next, DPM 2007 built on top of the innovations that had already been put in place and expanded the scope of protection to reliable support for key Microsoft workloads, while adding tape backups and disaster recovery options. The focus was to back up the application data in the consistent and supported way. This was made possible by leveraging the Volume Shadow copy Service technology in Windows, which guarantees recoverability and allows backups with minimal downtime of the application.
