DPM 2007 and Tape Timeout

By default, if you don't change the tape or if you don't have enough space in the tape, the DPM backup process will fail in 60 minutes. In other words, DPM will not wait forever for a free tape and it will timeout within 60 minutes. You can modify the default timeout configuration by editing the registry.

Here is the procedure:

1. Create a new Key called Prompting under HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Microsoft Data Protection Manager\1.0
2. Under Prompting, create a DWORD Value called PromptingTimeOut

The PromptingTimeOut value is milliseconds. Also, you need to restart the MSDPM service for this to take effect.

Data Protection Manager 2007 – Tape Usage

Here is an option to find out how much of a backup tape was used in DPM 2007.

1. Select Recovery tab and select Browse button in the left pane
2. Expand each protected server and select Protected data
3. In the middle pane, right click on the protected and select Show all Recovery Points
4. You will see the data size information there.
