Computer Migration - Things to Consider

Here are a few points which you can consider while doing computer migration. These points are applicable to all migrations irrespective of the migration tool (ADMT, NetIQ, Quest etc)

Active Directory User Migration

Here is a graphical representation of the high level steps involved in an Active Directory migration using ADMT

User Migration and Merging Using Quest Migration Manager

Pre-creating user account in the target domain is a common scenario these days due to single-sign-on solution, HR management procedure etc

Microsoft Right Management Service (RMS)

Overrides In Operations Manager 2007

I am sure you guys are familiar with "Overrides" in Operations Manager 2007. Since management packs are "sealed" in Operations Manager 2007, the modification of rules (for example change a threshold) is that easy. The overrides can be used to customize behavior of the Management Packs. I really like the idea but it lacks reporting capabilities. This override rule can make the configuration a big mess. I remember when we started using Group Policy, we didn't have a good tool to get the result of the GPO. I have a fear that the override rule can be very messy if you don't document everything. Hopefully, MS will come up with a reporting option to generate the "Resultant Set of Overrides".
