I know there are a lot of questions about the new features included in DPM 2010 and upgrade path from DPM 2007. I am also curious like you guys. Anyway, following are some information I have gathered from the DPM newsgroups and beta documentation.
- Standalone Server Protection: DPM 2010 is expected to protect machines which are not currently in an Active Directory™ domain. This feature is intended to support customer requests to protect machines in their DMZ (non-secured extranet), Hyper-V hosts that are standalone, and service providers who intend to provide hosted backup services to their customers. This feature is not yet available in the public beta release, but is intended by the release candidate in early calendar 2010.
- DPM Beta to RTM Upgrade: Upgrade from DPM 2010 Beta to RTM will be provided
- More granular option for backup schedule
- System Recovery Tool ( SRT): SRT is still available as-is for Windows 2003 servers. For Windows 2008 and above, DPM 2010 will have a better integrated story in time for the final release (not available in beta though).
- DPM 2007 to DPM 2010 Upgrade: DPM supports upgrading from DPM 2007 SP1 on a Windows Server 2008 x64-bit operating system to DPM 2010 Beta. If DPM 2007 SP1 is installed on a Windows Server 2003 x64-bit operating system, you must upgrade to Windows Server 2008 before upgrading to DPM 2010 Beta.
- SQL 2005 upgrade and DPMDB: If you are using a location instance of SQL 2005, the DPM 2010 installation process will install SQL 2008 and move the DPMDB to this new SQL instance. You need to manually uninstall the SQL 2005 instance.
- DPM 2010 can be installed on a Domain Controller
- Automatically grow volumes: If you enable this option, DPM will automatically expand the replica and recovery volume if needed.
- Automatically perform consistency check:You have an option to enable automatic consistency check if replica is inconsistent. But this option is recommended for workloads less than 1 TB, file servers with less than 100,000 file and folders.
- SharePoint: You can recover items (sites, document libraries, lists, and documents) from an Office 14 SharePoint farm without a recovery farm
- Dismiss Multiple Alerts: Supports multi-selection of alerts and inactivating them
- Disaster Recovery: DPM 2010 allows more complex and cost-effective disaster recovery scenarios through cyclic protection and chaining. Cyclic protection enables two DPM servers to protect each other, and is typically aimed at smaller architectures, such as in a branch office.
